Sound is an essential element in everyone’s life, but for a musician it’s their livelihood, a medium through which they convey their passion and creativity.

Cary, a professional musician and retired professor of music, experienced a life-altering challenge when he suddenly lost hearing in his right ear after a routine flight from Lubbock to Houston.

For someone whose life revolves around perfecting the art of sound, this was more than just a setback; it felt like losing a cherished tool of expression.

The Unexpected Silence

“I was in my late 50s, had a mild head cold, and flew from Lubbock to Houston,” Cary remembers. “When I arrived on my return flight back to Lubbock, I could not hear anything out of my right ear.”

Five years of consultations, surgeries, and medications left him disheartened but undeterred, despite his initial concerns about how he would process sound.

“Being a professional musician, I was concerned that wearing hearing aids would dramatically alter the way I perceived sound and was concerned that music would sound ‘artificial,’” he says. “Additionally, my mom and both sets of grandparents had experienced severe hearing issues and had tried various hearing devices with very little success.”

Thankfully, Cary knew that there was a solution out there to help, and with some guidance from a colleague, he found himself at Cornerstone Audiology.

A New Symphony Begins

Cary met with our expert team, and he immediately felt at ease with the knowledge that he was in the right place.

“I was very impressed with the professionalism and courteousness of the staff,” Cary recalls. “They explained the intricacies of my hearing problems and explained how hearing aids would help me regain a significant part of my hearing experience.”

His fear of diminished sound quality was carefully addressed. Our team walked Cary through their recommendations and helped him decide on the best hearing devices for his unique needs as a musician.

The process was thorough, and it focused on achieving a balance that would respect his musical ear by preserving the integrity of the sounds so crucial to his art.

The Melody of Everyday Life

The decision to embrace hearing aids was transformative for Cary, something that he found from the moment he stepped out the door to head to work.

“I remember the first morning after I began wearing hearing aids, I walked outside and immediately thought to myself, ‘Holy Moly, those birds are loud,’” he says. “I realized how much of life I had been missing.”

His testimonial serves as an encouragement to others, especially those hesitant about hearing aids due to misconceptions about sound quality distortion. With the right support, the world of music remains vibrantly intact, so you can hear the life you love with ease.

When Was Your Last Hearing Test?

Cary urges others not to let precious time slip away. His journey is a testament to the transformative power of professional auditory care and technology, which can bridge the gap between silence and sound, absence and presence.
