Today, there are two main types of hearing aids: daily wear and extended wear. Daily wear devices are made to function for several years, and come in a variety of styles, including behind the ear (BTE), custom made for your ear, and receiver in the ear (RIC). Extended-wear devices, such as the Lyric, are designed to perform over much shorter periods. They sit deep inside the ear canal; there is no day to day insertion and removal or changing a battery. How Does It Work?
Unlike daily wear devices, a patient has to meet certain criteria to qualify for the Lyric. Their hearing capacity has to fall within a certain range, which an audiologist can determine during a hearing evaluation. If they fulfil these requirements and choose to invest in the Lyric, an audiologist will conduct a fitting of the device. They’ll begin by measuring the depth and size of the person’s ear canal, before programming the hearing aid for the unique needs of the patient. Then, they’ll place it into the person’s ear, where it will stay for six to eight weeks before it’s removed and exchanged for a new one.
What Are The Benefits?
For most patients, the main attraction of the Lyric is that it’s invisible. As the Lyric sits inside someone’s ear, there’s no way another person can tell that they’re wearing a piece of hearing technology. With the Lyric, patients also don’t need to continually change batteries. This sometimes-fiddly process is completely avoided, as they never have to touch their device once it’s in place. The Lyric is also advantageous for those with memory loss and dementia. Daily wear devices are extremely small, delicate items, and it’s not uncommon for people to accidentally lose or break them.
What Investment Is Required?
Typically, a hearing aid wearer will invest in a healthcare plan, which will include a pair of daily wear devices. It will also consist of a warranty, so they don’t incur costs if their hearing aid has an issue, and a series of check-ups, to monitor their progress. However, the Lyric works through a subscription service. With this, they’ll invest a certain amount of money every year in order to have continuous access to devices and fittings. With only six to eight weeks between each visit, patients will get to speak to their audiologist on a regular basis.
