I treat many different patients in my audiology practice, and I have never met a person who looked forward to hearing loss. However, ignoring the possibility may cause extensive damage and severely inhibit the ability to hear. That is why it is so important to visit an audiologist regularly to evaluate your hearing health. We understand hearing loss, and we know the signs of diminishing hearing ability. If you have any questions about hearing loss, you should consult an audiologist, but in the interim, we will discuss some of the signs of hearing loss and how scheduling a hearing test can benefit your health.
The Signs of Hearing Loss
The following signs suggest that you are experiencing some level of hearing loss.
Difficulty Hearing
This seems obvious, but if your ability to hear people speak in person or on the phone is diminished, that is a sign of hearing loss. This can be brought on by an injury, exposure to loud noises, or several other causes.
Your Ears Feel Blocked Up or “Heavy”
Any change in how your ears feel, inside or out, may indicate a hearing loss. Clogged ears may be an indication that there is some dysfunction within the ear. An audiologist can help to identify the cause and to develop a plan to restore normal hearing, if possible.
You Avoid Social Situations
Many people who suffer from hearing loss avoid social situations because of the frustration and embarrassment that can result from poor hearing. Most people have difficulty admitting their hearing loss, but if you are sacrificing your social life because of your hearing, you most likely have a problem.
You Feel Irritable and Tired
Hearing loss can be exhausting. The energy that a person must expend to attempt to hide their difficulty hearing can leave them tired and irritable. This is partly due to the energy that they must use to try to hear and partly due to the anxiety that living that way causes.
If you have experienced any of these signs, don’t worry, it isn’t the end of the world. Hearing loss can be reversed in some situations, and an audiologist can treat all hearing loss. Admitting the problem and visiting a professional can lead you to a better quality of life and better hearing health.
How Can a Hearing Test Help?
A hearing test can give you and your audiologist insight into the state of your hearing health. A hearing test will confirm whether you have hearing loss and tell you,
- What type of hearing loss you have,
- The severity of your hearing loss,
- The best options for treatment.
Schedule Your Hearing Test
I have helped many patients deal with their hearing loss. Most people don’t want to admit that they have hearing loss, but admission and treatment is the only way to improve your hearing health. We can often partially or completely restore a patient’s hearing, and we can find a way to treat all hearing loss, but we can’t do anything if you don’t schedule a hearing test. At Cornerstone Audiology, we believe that life is worth hearing, and we want to help. Contact us to schedule your hearing test so that we can help you in your journey to good hearing health.
