If you’re experiencing hearing loss challenges, you’re not alone, and you’re not “too young.” Did you know that almost 38 million American adults ages 18 and over report some trouble hearing?
Our world is much louder than it once was, and the everyday noises all around us can damage our hearing. Hearing loss is totally normal for many young adults.
Everyone’s level of hearing loss is different, and hearing care is not one size fits all. No matter which age bracket you’re in, personalized hearing care is for you. A hearing test could help you understand your hearing loss challenge before it gets more serious.
How Can a Hearing Assessment Help Me?
You may be surprised to learn that when faced with a hearing challenge, many people will wait up to seven years before seeking treatment. This delay can lead to other healthcare issues, such as cognitive decline.
Treating hearing loss promptly is one of the best things you can do for your overall health! Getting your hearing assessed and cared for has proven not only to help with your hearing health but your mental health as well. We see many patients here at Cornerstone Audiology who come in for a hearing assessment and leave feeling more confident in their hearing, themselves, and their futures.
It can be tough to ask for help for a hearing challenge, but understanding that you are not alone can help. Getting your hearing assessed is a huge step in the right direction.
What Happens during a Hearing Assessment?
During your hearing assessment, you and your doctor will begin by reviewing your health history. Hearing loss is often genetic, so it’s helpful to understand whether your family has a history of hearing loss. We will also get to know more about your lifestyle and your goals for your hearing health.
Our audiologists will then perform a visual inspection of the outer ear and eardrum, which is called an otoscopy. Next, they will perform a test to assess your middle ear space. Pure tone audiometry is also performed to find your hearing threshold at multiple frequencies. Word understanding testing helps us to determine your ability to process speech at different loudness levels. Don’t worry – this entire process is completely painless and takes just over an hour.
After your hearing test is finished, your audiologist will review your results with you and discuss potential treatment options if you do have a hearing loss. We’re here to help – and by understanding the root cause of your hearing loss, we’ll be able to help you even more.
Getting your hearing tested is highly recommended after you reach 50 – and not just because age is a major factor in causing hearing loss. Hearing assessments can also let us know whether you’re in need of additional medical attention, possibly for a separate health condition that could have hearing loss as its predecessor.
A hearing assessment can help you take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health so you can continue to experience life at its fullest.
