Cigna is a major player in the hearing insurance industry, and because of that, they have options for you.
Choosing the best package will depend on your specific situation, so if you’re considering enrolling, please read this first and then contact us to get a customized assessment.
Medicare vs. Cigna
Most people with a hearing loss fall in the 65+ age range, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The official statistic is one in three people between 65-74 and half of the 75+ population experience some form of hearing loss.
This means that most people who could benefit from hearing aids are also eligible for Medicare coverage.
Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover hearing aids or hearing care, leaving many dependent on it without the means to acquire hearing aids.
Cigna is among the insurance companies that provide supplemental assistance for those with Medicare coverage, providing three main options.
Cigna’s health maintenance division allows you to select doctors, specialists, and facilities from within its network of providers. The choices are more plentiful than you may think.
The HealthSpring Advantage network provides $700 per ear for hearing aids. This repeats every three years; you get a free routine hearing exam each year.
Selecting a hearing care provider outside of Cigna’s network could limit your coverage or cost you more money.
We can check for you what your options are within the Cigna network before you decide to enroll.
The preferred provider organization insurance plan is less restrictive than the HealthSpring Advantage by allowing members to choose their own doctors, specialists, and facilities.
There are still out-of-network costs associated if you decide to use providers who are not a part of the network.
The Cigna-HealthSpring Preferred plan offers hearing aids once every three years at the same $700 per year maximum coverage.
Exclusive Provider Network
The exclusive provider network programs are also available through Cigna.
Plans in this category are something of an HMO and PPO hybrid with slightly more flexibility than the HMO plans. Still, they include uncovered out-of-pocket expenses if you seek care outside their specified network.
Hearing aid coverage is included in Cigna’s EPO plans, but coverage varies.
Finding the best policy for you will take into account your location and whether hearing care and hearing aids were options added to your plan.
