Convincing Those with Suspected Hearing Loss to Test Their Hearing

01/15/2018 | Hearing Loss, Patient Resources

We love our family members dearly, even though they can be quite difficult to deal with at times, especially when it comes to their reluctance to admit to having a hearing problem. If we suggest to our parents that it might be a good idea to get their hearing tested, they deny having any problems and scoff at the idea. This denial might stem from a deep-rooted fear over the certainty of having hearing loss.

Aversion from getting a hearing test done is apparently an extremely common problem with those who have hearing loss. In fact, an article suggested that people wait an average of seven to ten years before seeking any kind of help for their hearing problem. Furthermore, only one in seven individuals actually uses hearing aids despite having significant hearing problems.

Thankfully, there are some efficient measures that can be taken to help those with hearing loss get their hearing tested and treated appropriately. Begin by emphasizing the importance of having good hearing and express your own sense of sorrow that results from their missing out on important parts of your life due to their hearing loss. Use specific examples of moments in conversations where they admitted to being unable to hear or had missed out on hearing.

Have a candid and open conversation with your loved one’s medical professional to request them to encourage your loved one to obtain a checkup to test their hearing. Doctors are authority figures that are hard to turn down. Furthermore, doctors can use their specialized knowledge of medical studies to educate your family member of the adverse effects of hearing loss on overall health, which may help convince your loved one to get their hearing tested.

Most importantly, take the time and effort to do a thorough research on your part so that you yourself are well-educated about the effects and treatment options for hearing loss. You can then convince your loved one with more certainty. After this, take the effort to explore and find suitable hearing care professionals near your area and schedule an appointment for your loved one and offer to go with them to get their hearing tested. This way they will be less likely to cancel or skip their appointment and will also gain moral support with your presence.

Admitting to having hearing loss can be a difficult and emotionally challenging time. Being there for your loved one can help make this time a lot more bearable. Hearing loss is an irreversible problem, but timely treatment can help restore your loved one with a renewed sense of hearing and help them gain a better quality of life.
